BiographyIra Losco

Ira Losco is one of the biggest names in Maltese music,
and her career spanning over 15 years has seen her win more than 20 music awards.

Ira has twice opened concerts for Sir Elton John and has performed alongside Katie Melua,
Maroon 5, Akon, Enrique Iglesias, Ronan Keating, Tokio Hotel, Gigi D`Alessio and many more.
She has also had a string of chart topping singles, including “What I’d Give,” “The Person I Am,”
and “Me Luv U Long Time.” Her fifth album will be released this year.

Of course Ira is also no stranger to Eurovision, having come within 12 points of winning
the Eurovision Contest in Tallinn. She returns to the Eurovision stage 14 years later
in Stockholm with a powerful song, “Walk on Water”.

Beyond music, Ira is an advocate for LGBTI rights, supports anti-bullying initiatives and campaigns
to help teenagers protect themselves from revenge porn. In 2008 she was awarded a prestigious
medal by the President of Malta in recognition of her outstanding achievements.

Dear Gordon,

not many people would risk their lives to save others. We live in a world where as us Maltese would say “l-Ewell jien, it-tieni jien, it-tielet jien u jekk jifdal jien” ...... so when we heard your story, we were all shocked but also in admiration of your courage and bravery. Your parents raised you well. I hugged your mother hard yesterday and I cannot even begin to imagine the pain in her heart.

You are one of the most beautiful angels in the Heavens above! It was my honour to sing for you xxxxx rest in peace

Yesterday I had a long conversation with an individual who has a relative who uses a wheelchair. It's been a few years since I've known individuals who also use a wheelchair and through concerts I've held, I was made even more aware of the importance of wheelchair access.

This person I was speaking to explained to me that her relative had to stop an educational course halfway because the venue where she attended the course did not have a lift to the second floor where the second year lectures of her course were taking place in.

We also spoke about pavements, for example those too narrow, consequently causing even pedestrians to walk in the street. Light or sign poles stuck in the middle of those pavements causing lack of access.

It is unfair and unheard of in 2018 to put anyone at a disadvantage because he or she is in a wheelchair. We are so proud of advancements in many sectors : the help children who have conditions at school are given, the improved homes for the elderly, the help those families who are living in terrible conditions are given….. All well and good. I ask if someone took the, very laborious, yet respectable and well needed job of making sure there is wheelchair access everywhere…. And making a note and amends for these locations, streets, venues…. Wouldn't that be a good idea… and also about time? Again…. 2018…..

Cars parked on pavements or blocking the lowered pavement don’t help matters either

You said.."Making Amends..About time" Kind of surprised with all the changes I see in Malta that Wheelchair access was not a priority a long time ago. Perhaps you should contact Miss/Mrs Miriam Dalli whose columns I read most of the time sharing her concern for a number of things under discussion. I also know about narrow sidewalks something we experience at Gzira sometime ago. Hdwe Store places mdze on sidewalk leaving very little space for one passer by...in conversation with another man blocking this narrow passage..sees us four..self/wife/two boys..coming stayed put as we had to get off the sidewalk and walk against oncoming traffic..About one of the Boys...in wheelchair for a number of years...miraculously started walking 1984..so encouraged visited Malta after 32 years absence for eight weeks and had a great time..Enough said....Check...Mrs Dalli....

On my last visit to Malta last year that is exactly what I thought, how do disabled people either on unsteady feet/legs or in wheelchairs get around Malta on such uneven footpaths, roads and lack of ramps? It’s something that definitely needs to be addressed

All so true Ira! Postijiet pubbliċi, postijiet ta' divertiment, bankini...li jien personali nħossni aktar komda nimxi fit-triq milli fuq il-bankina għaliex ħafna bankini mhux tajbin, l-imwejjed f'restaurant...mejda hi xi ħaġa bażika u sfortunatament huma ftit imwejjed li jkunu tajbin għall-wheelchair users kollha. Kien hemm drabi li mort f'restaurants u ma nkunx nista' nidħol mall-mejda sew għax jew tkun baxxa ħafna jew ma tkunx wiesa' biżżejjed etc. Punt ieħor li dejjem insemmi hu events bħal concerts, festivals etc. Jien persuna li s-sezzjonijiet idejquni ħafna, allura ma naqbilx li jien għandi noqgħod f'sezzjoni apposta għall-wheelchair users li ħafna drabi persuna waħda biss titħalla ħdejk, madanakollu kollu nemmen li hawn min jippreferi joqgħod hemm minħabba li ġeneralment din is-sezzjoni tkun fuq quddiem allura nemmen li kunċerti u events għandhom ikunu f'postijiet aċċessibbli kompletament biex ikun hemm id-dritt ta' l-għażla. Min jippreferi joqgħod quddiem ikun jista' jagħmel dan imma min bħali li Nippreferi noqgħod wara u nkun mall-persuni kollha li nkun għażilt li mmur magħhom, inkun nista' nagħmel hekk faċilment.

So well written. Here in Australia access for wheelchairs are so important. At the beach where I live our local council has made it possible for those using wheelchairs to access our sandy beaches by laying proper access mats down from path to shore

I saw the saddest thing few weeks ago in Paceville in church street just up from arkadia a youngish girl pushing her Mum or relative up and because of the scaffolding on the pavement she couldn't go any further, she tried getting down onto zebra crossing and struggled because there wasn't a ramp eventually she managed and as she tried to get up the hill on the busy road the car behind her was hooting at her to get out the way like with a face of wtf you doing on the road?? I went out and spoke to the guy from his car window and said the poor girl has no choice D#%^^%{%d

It's a similar issue in my own school, but instead we are in portercabins, reason being is the roof collapsed on the original building, which destroyed the electrics. And if I told you that there's about 15 visually impaired, with myself being one of them, attending the school. When they did move in at first, there were no paving between the cabins, which is dangerous, especially for the blind. But they have paved the area since then. However, the new school building hasn't even started yet as they the builders are currently building houses, behind the site, even they haven't demolished the old school yet, due to the fact of the Irish housing crisis, which is really effecting homelessness in my country. And as well, a massive building company, went bankrupt recently as other schools are waiting for new school buildings yet. We could have more school buildings by now, but the government haven't put enough money towards Education and Healthcare. If I was the prme minister in the country, I put more money towards those two sectors and put less towards something like Agriculture and get those schools built as soon as possible as currently, we have been waiting 4 years for a new school, at this point, promising it would be built before the next year, which they have never kept.

Wheelchair accessibility will make life easier, not just for those who are wheelchair bound but also to anyone who has a child in a stroller, or who has mobility issues such as the elderly. Some of the things are just common sense, but at times I think that common sense is not so common after all.

Ira Losco shared Greatest Showman's video.

Greatest Showman
Back in 2007 I struggled with extreme fatigue, self-doubt and to top it all off I was losing my voice. I went to a psychologist, a doctor, an ENT and a speech therapist. The medical part was being taken care of very well by the said professionals, but my speech therapist Norma delved deep and spoke the language of music to me. Music picks you up when you’ve fallen down. It leads you home when you’ve been lost.
